PHARMACOLOGY


Pharmacology is the branch of science which deals with the study of drugs and their interaction with the human body. This subject is taught in the 2nd year of BDS Professional studies. The academic staff share a commitment to top-quality teaching which emphasizes general principles and integrates into it the latest findings of modern research.

The course covers the drug groups that are a part of the syllabus set by H.S.C / PMDC and the University of Karachi. It comprises of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, general pharmacology, mechanism of actions of different drugs, their interaction and adverse affects on the human body.

The practical work is carried out under the supervision of trained and skilled demonstrators. Each experiment is first discussed and demonstrated and then students are asked to carry out the drug preparations themselves. The department provides ample facilities to carry out the experiments. The lab work is then charted in a lab journal. Weekly discussions, tutorials and presentations are conducted by the department to promote student participation and one on one interaction. Visits to drug manufacturers / pharmaceutical companies is an essential part of the teaching and training program and gives a first hand knowledge of production of branded medicines.
